In the fall of 2015, John Schlicker along with several other northern Michigan residents, formed a chapter of Norml registered as North Eastern Lower Peninsula (NELP)MiNorml, in the small town of Lincoln, Mi where approximately only 337 residents reside. One of the immediate goals of the Chapter was to put on a fundraiser in 2016. This event would educate the locals and contribute to the then current petition for legalizing recreational marijuana in Michigan. This single day event didn’t have a name of any sorts. There was a pulled pork dinner, with an auction and 50/50 raffle, as well as several speakers regarding the petition for legalization and the raids that were occurring at an alarming rate. This small fundraiser was a great success and the group was able to contribute a good deal of money to the cause.
In 2017, the Chapter decided to hold another event and to step it up. For this event several live bands were added to the dinner, auction, and speakers. The speakers for 2017 weren’t only regarding the legalization attempt and what to do in the event of a raid but also regarding current laws and the changes coming. The Chapter also invited speakers to discuss health conditions like chronic pain and epilepsy and treating with CBD in addition to THC. Again, NELP MiNorml saw a great success and the group began to plan for expansion.
2018 brought more growth and changes for the event in the little town of Lincoln. The first major change was the event was given a name “Cannapalooza Worldwide”. For 2018, there was a pig roast, a medicating tent, 6 bands including Razor Ray and Les Older and the Ganja Gang, 10 educational speakers regarding health, laws, science, a comedian, and a visual artist. This event would also turn out to be a great success, much more than the past fundraisers had been. During the 2018 year, the Chapter made the decision to change the name a bit to match the mission statement which is “contributing to the elimination of cannabis prohibition worldwide through music, arts, and education”. “Cannapalooza Worldwide” was then created as a separate entity, sponsored by NELP MiNorml. It was also decided that with such success as the 2018 year brought that the next step for 2019 would be a weekend long music, arts, and education festival. This was always the overall goal and a dream of founder John Schlicker, with his team backing him Cannapalooza Worldwide was created and planning began.
In 2019, Cannapalooza Worldwide was fully launched as a three day music, arts, and educational festival with 24 vendors, live artistry, and camping in Hubbard Lake, MI. There were 2 days of music from 16 bands and a full day of speakers educating guests about cannabis, using cannabis for ailments, CBD, and a hempcrete demonstration.
2020 brought us Covid and sadly we had to cancel our planned 2020 event. Each year Cannapalooza Worldwide will be even better than previous years with things like:
- Two full days of music with 15 bands
- Sunday afternoon of education on CBD, Autism, and using Hempcrete
- There will also be vendors
- Performing artists
